The Director's Cut

The Pentland Hills really are an often overlooked gem of an area right on the doorstep of Edinburgh. So many people have made comments that they've discovered an entirely new area or parts of the hills that they'd never been to, despite living minutes from the race HQ. I hope everyone got a good flavour of the area and the tremendous trails and tranquility that can be found in the heart of the hills. Once down in the valley, only the occasional low flying aircraft tells you that civilisation is merely over the hill. The views on Saturday were stunning from the Carnethy ridge line, looking across the Forth to Fife, South to the Borders, and further afield to the Ochils, Trossachs and Stirlingshire. I hope you got a chance to glance up from the map now and again.

Big thanks have to go to the Pentland Hills Ranger Service, City of Edinburgh Council and to the local farmer who allowed us to use his field edge for car parking. However, most thanks have to be saved for our invaluable marshals and volunteers who you met out on the course; Mark at CP 102, Rachel at the Talent Show at 108, Ross at the Mental Challenge at 122, Dan and Martina at the kayaking and Jean looking after the Bike Drop. Also Alun Morton-Lloyd who placed checkpoints all along the Carnethy Hill ridge on Saturday morning, then ran it all again Saturday evening to collect them in again.

Thanks to those who have travelled the breadth of the country to come to 2 or 3 of the races this year, and congratulations to the series prize winners above. I hope you've all discovered or rediscovered some cracking parts of Scotland and will take the opportunity when it next arises to return and check out the areas at a more leisurely pace.

Ewen Robertson, was out on course taking photographs that are now up on Sleepmonsters.co.uk. Have a look here to see if you can find some snaps of yourself in action and download one as a memento of a great day in the hills.

Best Wishes
