1. Only few Days to Go – Places still available
It’s just a week to go until you will be let loose on the Pentland Hills the annual Wan Day. For the 2nd year running we have a new venue to start you off, with Swanston Golf Centre kindly hosting us for 2010. If you have taken part in the Wan Day before then you’ll know the deal with the course and format possibilities, and it’ll be a pleasure to see you back again. If you are new to the event ... welcome... you will not be at any great disadvantage, as the checkpoints, course and format changes and improves with every year. Expect the usual topographical entertainment and a few unusual locations and challenges.
Tell your mates that there are still places available for the Wan Day – the only surviving navigational Adventure Race in Scotland! Click here to enter. Online entries will be open until Thursday 19th September midday. Entries on the day will be charged £5 extra. Alternatively, come and join us with the Crewing, and enjoy a rewarding day out on the hill or in the valley, perhaps running one of our activities. For any ‘wan’-nabie crew out there email crew@ratraceadventure.com
2. Event Format and Some Rules
The following is worth noting already, for this year’s event ....
• At least one Running checkpoint must be visited
• At least one Cycling checkpoint must be visited
• At least one Kayaking checkpoint must be visited
• There may be one or more bike-to-kayak or bike-to-run transitions. When leaving the bike, bike-only related equipment can be left with the bike).
• Some special activity checkpoints may be described as mandatory
• Some checkpoints may only be accessed within certain time windows
• Some other special conditions may exist - – watch out for this on the day ... we wouldn’t want you to miss out on the fun!
The pre-marked map (CPs and Values) for the event will be an A4 sized, 1:50 000 Ordnance Survey map printed on waterproof paper. You may wish to bring a sealable bag for extra protection. This map will be handed out after (or during) a short initial LeMans start run circuit.
Race numbers should be attached to your front or thigh. The medical form is located on the back of the number, this must be filled in before you start.
SPORTident cards must be worn on the wrist, and remain as distributed at registration. The SPORTident card is your responsibility until you hand it back at the finish line. Due to the cost of the technology there will be £20 charge if you lose your SI Card once in your possession.
Pairs and Teams MUST stay together unless instructed otherwise. Separating is cheating and against the spirit of the event for fair competition.
The BIG question is; ‘Is the course clearable?’ Only the uber-beings will demonstrate.
These simple rules are the requirement for both the Simply Blended and Cask Strength Classes. For more info on format, activities and scoring, please see this web page here.
3. Event Location and Parking
For 2010 we will be using the newly developed facilities of Swanston Golf Centre as our venue for the Wan Day event village. Our set up will be just behind the driving range where there will be a marquee providing registration and shelter with parking right beside using the club’s overflow parking. Please park where directed by the marshal and do NOT use the tarmac car park beside the clubhouse. Catering is available via The Clubhouse restaurant and bar on site with a great range of food and drinks for before and after your adventure. Please bring all the energy bars, snacks & drinks you need. Toilets will be available at the event village.
Important: We are sharing this centre with other paying customers and it may be busy. Please be courteous to the other users of this facility.
Directions to the site are as follows;
If cycling or arriving from Edinburgh: Access Swanston via Swanston Road. After crossing the bypass, take the 1st left in to the event village field and follow the marshal’s instructions on where to park.
If driving East on the bypass, slip off at Bigger junction and turn left along Biggar Road. At Fairmilehead junction turn left and along Oxgangs Road. Turn left on to Swanston Road. Swanston Golf Centre is signposted. Then directions as above.
If driving West on the bypass, slip off at Bigger junction and turn right, over the bypass and along Biggar Road. At Fairmilehead junction turn left and along Oxgangs Road. Turn left on to Swanston Road. Swanston Golf Centre is signposted. Then directions as above.

Expect to get wet, muddy, dry, wet again, challenged, lost, found again, then rewarded with your event finishing after a classic day out with great people. Remember to smile when it gets tough, and to go faster if it’s feeling a bit too easy!
One item of equipment advice here: As we have never used this event location before, we are not aware of the true level of risk of theft or potentials for this. Please secure and hide all valuables left in cars, or at the event centre. Please consider using a bike lock for the day, for whenever you leave your bike unattended. We will marshal any bike transitions but the security of your possessions remains your responsibility.
See you soon, in a world of bike/run/kayak!
