Event Format

The Wan Day is a superb way to get into the exciting sport of adventure racing. Designed for you do as much or as little as you want and giving you the choice of whether to take part on your own or with mates, this event suits all abilities. There are two classes to choose from depending on your experience, fitness or just sheer brass neck! You choose. In either class you can enter as a soloist, or as a team of 2, 3 or 4. These can be mixed or single gender teams.

Location

The exact location of the Wan Day event start/finish area is revealed via mailout and news nearer the event. Traditionally it has taken place in various locations within the central belt of Scotland all stones-throw of Edinburgh and Glasgow, such as the now well-established The Pentland Hill's. Wherever it is, you are sure to be an excellent sample of what Scotland has to offer..

Simply Blended Class

This features up to 5 hours of activity, comprising (on average, from past events) approx 3.5 hrs of biking, 1 hr of running (and maybe some walking if you are spent!) and 1/2 hr of kayaking, though you can actually choose the exact amount of biking or running you do – the choice is yours, on the day. During the 5 hrs we'll hit you with some problem solving exercises and where we can incorporate them, we’ll throw in some devilish obstacles. The running and biking will be of a “score format” which means you have a set time to get to as many checkpoints as you can within the time limit. These will be worth different values so you'll have to figure out which ones you have time to get to or have the energy or desire to push yourself to. If you want to take it easier then go for the controls that you feel comfortable collecting within the time available.

The 5 hours is over a ‘score’ format with the kayaking stage as one of the activity checkpoints, so if you don't want to go kayaking you don't have to! (Hint: It's probably quite profitable points-wise to do it though!) The kayaking stage is non-technical and on our super-safe sit-on-top kayaks, and is aimed to give novices a good first go. The Simply Blended class of the event starts at 1pm, which means that you'll be piling into the finish at the same time as the Cask Strength, at 6pm. This class is suitable for those wishing to have their first go at adventure racing or for a less strenuous day out. No special skills are required but you should practice some map reading and you should be equipped for up to 5 hours out in the hills.

Cask Strength Class

This consists of up to 8 hours of activity, breaking down (on average, from past events) to approx 5 hrs of biking, 2 hrs of running (and maybe some walking) and 1 hr of kayaking, though you can actually choose the exact amount of biking or running you do – the choice is yours, on the day. During the 8 hrs we'll hit you with some problem solving exercises and where we can incorporate them, some devilish obstacles. All day is a ‘score’ format with the kayaking section one of the activity checkpoints, so if you don't want to go kayaking you don't have to! (Hint: It's probably quite profitable points-wise to do it though!) The kayaking stage is non-technical and on our super-safe sit-on-top kayaks, and is aimed to give novices a good first go. The Cask Strength class of the event starts at 10 am, which means that you'll be piling into the finish at the same time as the Simply Blended class, at 6 pm. The Cask Strength class is deal for those looking to push themselves that bit harder and who may have a little previous AR experience, even if that's one Rat Race, through to those super fit teams looking for a good day's racing. Whether entering the Simply Blended or Cask Strength classes, expect your class to be a hotly contested and entertaining work-out.

If you have a particularly eventful day, please come forward and tell us your stories! All prizes are provided by our partners at the Rat Race Adventure Store

Scoring

Controls have different values. The winning team in each class is the one with the highest score within the 6pm time limit, whether that is within 5 hours (Simply Blended) or 8 hours (Cask Strength). To register a score at a checkpoint, your electronic chip must be inserted into the electronic box until it beeps and the light flashes. The chip is given to you at Registration and worn on your wrist. At activity checkpoints you will complete your challenge and then register in the box once you have completed the activity.

Time Penalties

If you finish after 6 pm your team will lose points at the following rate:
1-10 mins 2 points per min
11-20 mins 4 points per min
21-30 mins 8 points per min
