The Director's Cut
If it's not one thing, it's another! Last time out we battled awful winds and inflatable kayaks, but this time it was that little most unwelcome of Scottish natives, the midgie, that had everyone frustrated. The weather was variable and I hope some people were able to see the great views across Glasgow and East across to the Firth of Forth when they were up on the hills. It had been an aim of mine to give you these glimpses, just to show you how close Carron Valley really is to the major Scottish cities.
The singletrack trails at Carron Valley were opened only this March and I hope a good few of you got to sample them. It would be a great help to further funding opportunities for more trail development, if you could leave your feedback on the trail at the Carron Valley development group's website here.
I also hope you enjoyed the singletrack section above the cliffs at North Third Reservoir, a few weeks ago these were dry as a bone and the view from there was special; hopefully some of you had glimpses of it too. The sticks activity caught a few people out and I have to apologise to the first few teams through that were given incorrect instructions, (not the marshal's fault at all), I think we have found out who you were and credited you with the points for it.
I have to thank the marshals that came to help on the day, and the night before, without whom the race simply would not happen.
Next up is Drumlanrig Castle on 16th September, an awesome location that recently played host to the Scottish Cross Country Mountain Biking Series and the mbr Big Weekend Endurance Mountain Bike Ride. There are miles and miles of singletrack in the woods, rarely visited compared to the other mountain bike trails in the Borders, but we'll have you out on the hills taking the in the views too. We have some very special and amusing activities lined up that can only happen at Drumlanrig and no where else...
Camping is available in the area and as it's not as close to the Central Belt as the other races, it may be worth thinking about staying over the night before. We're also thinking of having a wee gathering afterwards to celebrate the end of the Scottish season, perhaps a bbq, some drinks etc, but we need to know your thoughts on this. Please email me your thoughts on whether you'd like to camp the night before or after and if you'd be interested in staying around for some celebrations.
Well done again to our winners, UrbanAdventureGear.com (Cask Strength) and Carrots of Craigavon (Simply Blended) and to all our first time racers. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces and we'll put up some photos pretty soon.
Best Wishes, John Laughlin. Race Director and Planner
