The Director's Cut

The final round of the Wan Dae series drew to a close in some style I think you'll agree. The stunning backdrop of Drumlanrig Castle played the perfect host for one last day of Scottish AR for 2006. There were many new faces in the mix and it was great to see those that have been there for the whole series, thanks guys for supporting the race throughout the year.

The race itself was at my favourite venue with so much potential compared to other venues. There are miles and miles of trails in the woods around the castle, as I can testify when I got lost in the dark when putting out the controls the night before the race! Navigation by stars and setting sun without a map is perhaps a discipline that we can bring in next year as it certainly got my heart racing!

Originally we had hoped to use the River Nith for kayaking, however, this didn't work out as planned so we have to thank Scottish Water for allowing us the use of Kettleton Reservoir at short notice. The hills where the running took place were a last minute change from plan A but we think they worked wonderfully and presented you with some beautiful running (once the mist had cleared!).

From what our marshals had to say it sounded like the swim across the river at control 115 was the most amusing spot to be and most people entered into the sprit of things by jumping straight in leaving the lilo at the shore.

Some may be interested to know that on the cycle skills loop by the castle, you rode past the largest sycamore tree in the UK and at 119 the large boulder was known as the Rocking Stane until two kids came along and rocked it a bit too far. The ancient game of Gird n Cleek that was played in the stableyard recently had its World Championships down in Galloway, though after watching some of your attempts I'm not sure the titles will be threatened in 2007!

We have to say a big thanks to all the marshals who made it such a great series, who sat in some pretty bleak locations at times to make it all happen for you guys. Also to the Buccleuch Estate and Rik Allsop for all their work on the event and for letting us roam wild on their land. It's a fabulous place to bring the family and within easy reach of the Central Belt despite preconceptions, so we'll be back, but do come back yourself and visit. There are extensive trails in the woods, and several waymarked routes that we barely touched with the race and I can highly recommend coming back for more over the winter.

A report is now up on Sleepmonsters with more photos being added all the time.

It was a closer race than we realised in the end, with the Cask Strength being won by three points, not 53 as we'd originally said, so well done to Honey Stinger for just pipping Not the Olympians (who had never met before race day). Why oh Why in the Simply Blended Class were leagues ahead of the rest with a 155 point lead over 2nd place Over The Hill, though it was close between them and third place Ratty Racers with only 5 points in it.

Well done to everyone that raced, it was great to hear such nice feedback after the race and hope to see many of you out there racing in 2007 and beyond!

Best Wishes, John Laughlin. Race Director and Planner
